The University of Mumbai Information

INTRODUCTION

The Mumbai University of (earlier known as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It was established on 18th July, 1857. It is one amongst the first three universities in India, including Calcutta and Madras.
It has been accredited with Five Star status by NAAC and University with Potential for Excellence Award by UGC.
The University of Mumbai has two campuses having area of 230 acres at Kalina, Santacruz (East), and 13 acres at Fort. Around 500 affiliated colleges and 55 Departments with an enrolment of 6.5 lack students are engaged in teaching-learning process. It has established its name in industrial collaboration and runs various professional courses. The University is leading at national level in sports, cultural and other activities.

The Institute
University started its correspondence education in the year 1971 known as Directorate of Correspondence Course. In the year 1993 the Directorate of Distance Education was upgraded as Institute of Distance Education(IDE). Since its inception IDE has been giving high priority to human resource development by introducing various Traditional Degree courses as well as Technical and Professional courses through Distance mode.
University of Mumbai is the 7th University in the country which started distance education Programme in a conventional set up. Initially it started with the registration of 845 students which has grown up to a staggering figure of about 70,000 in the academic year 2007-08. Students are also giving excellent response by topping the merit list of the University.
Non-Resident Indians or Foreign students whether residing in India or abroad are NOT eligible.
The learning processes are mainly through the medium of printed study material which is supplemented by Personal Contact Programmes and Response Sheets in some subjects apart from Audio-Visual and Electronics aids being added to the system.

The Institute offers the following courses i.e. B.A., B.Com., M.A., M.Com., M.Sc., Maths, Two years Post-graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDFM) and Post-graduate Diploma in Operations Research for Management (PGDORM), B.Sc.(I.T.), M.Sc.(I.T), B.Sc. (Comp. Sc.), M.Sc. (Comp.Sc.), M.C.A. and B.Sc. (Nautical Technology)


Special Features
1. Eligibility requirements, Curricular content, mode of examination and the award of degrees are on par with the colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai and the Departments of the University of Mumbai.
2. Printed study materials are available in English and in few subjects in Marathi too.
3. Personal Contact Programme Lectures are arranged in some of the subjects during evening hours/Sundays/Holidays in the city of Mumbai and around for guidance of the students.(PCP Lecturers are likely to commence from November,2008.)
4. Audio-Visual Centre, Library, Reading Room facility in Mumbai.
5. Home-lending of books against deposit.
Important Achievements
The Institute is presently located in its own building of about 77, 000 square feet area and having a separate library exclusively for the distance learners with more than 35, 000 books. Some of our students have topped the merit list of the University and have bagged Gold Medal in M.A. Sanskrit, M.A. Marathi and Chancellor’s Medal in M.A. Hindi. Many students of IDE have gone abroad for seeking higher education in USA, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand etc. during last year. So far as the academic performance of the students is concerned, there were a good number of students who secured FIRST CLASS at B.A./B.Com. & M.A./M.Com. Degree examinations last year.
Instructional System
The methodology of instructions at institute of Distance Education of the University of Mumbai is different from that of the conventional University/College. Our system is more learner oriented & the learner is an active participant in the teaching learning process.
I.D.E. follows the multimedia approach in instruction. It comprises:
• Printed study materials are basically in English & wherever possible in Marathi also. The question-papers in the subject other than languages are printed in English with Marathi version. The students can write their answers in English, Marathi, Hindi or Gujarati if they indicate their choice for medium of answering in their Examination Form.
• Face to face interaction with teachers at PCP centers & Counseling at Headquarters by the core faculty.
• Counseling at Headquarters by the core faculty.
